SERVICES
The Water District’s primary role is to deliver replenishment water. Our staff is on call 365 days a year to monitor, manage and maintain a complex delivery system that provides water “insurance” to our member cities. We are also helping member cities with projects such as water treatment facilities, water conservation and recycled water. A “green energy” initiative of the District is the generation of electricity through our 1.05 megawatt hydroelectric power plant at the San Dimas turnout.
The “heart” of the Water District’s delivery system is the Devil Canyon-Azusa pipeline, which was constructed in 1972 to deliver water from the State Water Project to the Main San Gabriel Basin. The pipeline is about 38 miles long and runs west from the Devil Canyon Metering Facility in the San Bernardino Mountains to the San Gabriel Canyon Spreading Grounds in Azusa. The pipeline has three pressure reducing stations in Glendora, La Verne, and Fontana. The diameter of the pipeline ranges from 41" to 54" and down to 30", starting at Devil Canyon. The pipeline's capacity is 55cfs (cubit feet per second) which is the equivalent of 27,450 gallons per minute. The red line along the map represents the approximate route of the pipeline.
