Water Facts: Water Conservation

Water Conservation Facts

It is easy to forget that Southern California is mainly desert. For years, we have needed to have water sent to us from different places. While water conservation tools have advanced over the past several years, it's still up to each one of us to save water when we can. Here are some easy things you can do around the house to help save water:

  • Don't leave the faucet running while you are brushing your teeth. Only turn the faucet on before to wet your toothbrush, then after you finish brushing to rinse your toothbrush.

  • Take shorter showers when you can. Most showers should only take about ten minutes.

  • Do a frequent check around your house or apartment to see if there are any leaks.

  • Only run the dishwasher for full loads. If not, most dishwashers now have settings for smaller loads. If you don't have a dishwasher at home, do not leave the faucet running while you are washing the dishes. Instead, fill up one part of the sink with wash water and fill the other side with rinse water.

  • Only run the washing machine if you have a full load. If not, some washing machines have settings for smaller loads.

  • Install low-flow toilets and showerheads in your home. Some water providers offer special discounts for these devices to make them more affordable. Check with your water provider for more information.

  • Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of using the tap when you want a cold drink of water.

  • Don't use running water to thaw food.

  • Use only one glass for drinking water each day.

  • When you give your pet fresh water, use the old water on plants.

  • Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk.
